  Abbreviation In the process of communication words & word-groups can be shortened. The causes of shortening can be linguistic & extra-linguistic. By extra-linguistic causes, changes in the life of people are meant. A word, which has more than one meaning, is called polysemantic.          Different meanings of polysemantic word may come together due to the proximity of notions, which they express.                                                                                     Lecture Semasiology The branch of lexicology, which deals with the meaning of words and other linguistic signs is called semasiology  or semantics. Semantics is otherwise called “the science of meaning”. If treated diachronically, semasiology studies the development and changes of meaning in words. Synchronic approach to meaning deals with the study of semantic structure of words, as well as with the study of various types of meanings and of their roles in a language.
