  Abbreviation In the process of communication words & word-groups can be shortened. The causes of shortening can be linguistic & extra-linguistic. By extra-linguistic causes, changes in the life of people are meant. In Modern English many new abbreviations, acronyms, initials ( начальное сокращение ), blends ( слово - гибрид , образованное путем контрактации двух основ ( motel )) are formed because the tempo of life is increasing & it becomes necessary to give more & more information in the shortest possible time. A word, which has more than one meaning, is called polysemantic.          Different meanings of polysemantic word may come together due to the proximity of notions, which they express. Semantics is otherwise called “the science of meaning”. If treated diachronically, semasiology studies the development and changes of meaning in words.
